Train Wrecks, Survivors, and Charlie Sheen

Charlie Sheen.  What can I say?  First off, let me be clear that I have never met the man.  Our names will never be linked together in the tabloids or anything like that.  I was just watching the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen last night and realized that despite everything that has happen, there are many of us that actually root for Charlie because we see a little of him in ourselves and our loved ones.

It just hit me last night how much we should admire and respect the people that fight addictions, escape toxic relationships, and fight the urge to self-destruct.  I’m not just talking about Charlie, but the people that surround you every day that go to battle against destroying themselves.

We all stayed glued to our televisions to watch Charlie fall apart.  We were all there for “Winning”, “Tiger Blood”, the “Goddesses”, and the “Warlock”.  We couldn’t get enough of the train wreck.  We were spellbound as this celebrity publicly fought his demons.  Once you got past the three ring circus of it all, it was a life falling apart on the front pages.  So many people wrote him off at that point and considered him a has-been overnight.

Now here we are, September, and what happens?  Charlie Sheen is given a Comedy Central Roast.  I heard some people asking why it was that Charlie wouldn’t just go away.  Well, I know the answer.  Charlie can’t just go away.  He’s a survivor and won’t just give up and go away.

We all have friends and family members that are lost to addiction.  It’s the big secret that no one talks about and these people are fighting alone, without the eyes of the world on them.  These people refuse to give up and just go away, even if they stumble along, they are survivors.

So what can the rest of us learn from this?  Perhaps rather than looking down at someone that has made a mess of their life because of their addictions, maybe we should see the courage that it takes to stand up and admit their mistakes and survive to fight another day.  How can you not admire courage like that?

I write books about paranormal romance, I’m in no way an expert on human behavior but I have to admit that the survivors of addiction are not flawed in my opinion; they are the unsung heroes that struggle daily.

Charlie Sheen is the main focus of this blog post since he is the current face of train wrecks, but this post is about everyone who is struggling.  It’s about every person out there that needs a second chance, needs it to not be too late, and that needs someone to root for them as they put their life back together.  That’s Charlie Sheen.  So, for all those Charlie Sheens out there:

I wish you the very best and yes, you are WINNING!
